POLICY WIRE — London, UK — A vessel carrying more than 150 migrants is currently in distress in the English Channel following an engine fire. The coastguard has initiated a rescue operation to assist the troubled vessel, which is located southwest of the Channel.
The incident occurred when a large dinghy, believed to be carrying around 160 migrants, experienced an engine failure and subsequently caught fire in French waters. The Eastbourne lifeboat was deployed at 6am alongside French and British coastguard vessels to manage the crisis.
In a separate but related event, a migrant dinghy carrying 173 individuals capsized in the English Channel. Over 150 migrants were successfully rescued from the water. Additionally, a British vessel returned migrants to France as part of the ongoing rescue efforts.
The coastguard continues to coordinate the rescue mission, ensuring the safety of all individuals involved. Further updates are expected as the situation develops.
