POLICY WIRE — Kyiv, Ukraine — Ukraine has accused Russia of launching a missile strike on a Turkish-owned cargo ship, resulting in the deaths of six crew members. The incident occurred as the vessel, the Golden Leo, was departing a combat zone with a cargo of grain.

The Ukrainian navy reported that Russia fired three cruise missiles at the Golden Leo, which flies under the flag of Guinea-Bissau. The ship was struck while it was leaving the combat zone.

Andriy Sybiga, Ukraine’s Foreign Minister, confirmed that the crew included citizens from Syria — and India. Prime Minister Sergiy Koretsky condemned the attack, stating it underscores the dangers posed by Russian aggression in the region.

This attack comes just hours after Moscow launched a fresh barrage of missiles at Kyiv, further escalating the ongoing conflict. The Golden Leo’s journey was part of an effort to transport grain, a critical commodity, amid the turmoil.

The incident has drawn international attention, highlighting the risks faced by commercial vessels in conflict zones. The Turkish government has yet to issue an official statement on the matter.
