POLICY WIRE — London, United Kingdom — UK Finance Minister John Healey is set to unveil a major initiative targeting online marketplaces such as Amazon, eBay, and Temu, requiring them to collect taxes owed by sellers operating on their platforms.
The move, part of a broader £1 billion tax enforcement effort, aims to ensure that digital retailers contribute fairly to public funding, with the revenue potentially used to reduce business rates for traditional high street shops.
Several think tanks, including the Institute for Public Policy Research, have called for additional measures, such as a 2% tax on online purchases and a 1% levy on click-and-collect services, to support physical retail sectors facing economic challenges.
