UK Declares Drought in Nearly Three-Quarters of England Amid Record Dry Weather

POLICY WIRE — London, UK — Nearly three-quarters of England has been declared in a state of drought following unprecedented heatwaves and record-breaking dry weather. This declaration comes after July 2022 was recorded as the driest July in England and Wales since meteorological records began.

The Environment Agency has confirmed that 74% of England is now in drought, prompting severe water restrictions in affected regions. Local water companies have implemented hosepipe bans and are urging residents to conserve water usage.

“The current situation is critical. We are experiencing conditions that were previously unthinkable,” said a spokesperson from the Environment Agency. “Residents and businesses must take immediate action to reduce water consumption to help sustain supplies through this period.”

Climate experts warn that the frequency and severity of such droughts are likely to increase due to climate change. The Met Office has highlighted the need for long-term strategies to adapt to these changing weather patterns.

“We are seeing the effects of a warming planet. it is imperative that we take decisive action to reduce our carbon footprint and invest in sustainable water management practices,” said Professor Stephen Belcher, Chief Scientist at the Met Office.

The government has announced a series of measures to address the drought, including financial aid for affected farmers and investments in water infrastructure. However, environmental groups argue that more robust action is needed to prevent future crises.

“While these measures are a step in the right direction, we need a comprehensive plan to tackle the root causes of climate change and ensure the resilience of our water systems,” said Friends of the Earth Director, Craig Bennett.

Residents in drought-affected areas are being encouraged to report any issues with water supply to their local authorities. The government has also set up a dedicated helpline for drought-related inquiries.
