U.K. Announces Aerial Refueling Support for Saudi Arabia to Counter Houthi Threats
U.K. to provide aerial refueling to Saudi Arabia as Houthi attacks escalate in Yemen. Details on military support and regional tensions.
POLICY WIRE — London, United Kingdom — The United Kingdom has announced plans to provide limited military assistance to Saudi Arabia, including air-to-air refueling operations, to help counter ongoing attacks by Houthi rebels in Yemen.
Prime Minister Andy Burnham confirmed the move during a flight to the United Nations General Assembly in New York, stating that the Royal Air Force will support Saudi aircraft with refueling missions. The arrangement is expected to last for several weeks but will be reassessed as the situation evolves.
The conflict between the Houthis and Saudi-backed forces in Yemen has intensified, with Houthi groups launching missile and drone strikes on Saudi territory, including an attack on Riyadh that was intercepted. The group has also imposed a blockade on Saudi shipping in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, threatening global trade routes. British officials emphasized their commitment to maintaining stability in the region and protecting oil supply lines.
