The pilots, both employees of aviation contractor Precision, were the only ones aboard. A statement from the Alaska agency described the loss as a devastating blow to the wildland firefighting community, praising King as a dedicated aviator and friend. Precision expressed grief on social media, asking for privacy and compassion for the families and team during this difficult time. Over 580 personnel are currently working to contain the fire, which began on September 15 near Wawona, California, and is now 15% contained.
