Trump Calls for Capital Punishment for Those Who Murder Firefighters
President Trump directs the Justice Department to pursue the death penalty for anyone who kills a firefighter, expanding his stance on capital punishment.
POLICY WIRE — Washington, USA — President Donald Trump has announced a new push to implement the death penalty for individuals convicted of murdering firefighters. The proposal marks an expansion of his previous advocacy for capital punishment, which already included calls for the execution of those who kill police officers.
The President revealed his directive to the Justice Department during a luncheon held in the White House Rose Garden, an event organized to honor various firefighter associations. Addressing a crowd that included members of the International Association of Fire Fighters, Trump specifically stated that he wants the death penalty for “anybody that murders a firefighter going up a ladder.”
This policy stance aligns with broader executive actions taken by the administration. On January 20, 2025, President Trump signed an executive order titled Restoring the Death Penalty and Protecting Public Safety, which instructs the Attorney General to pursue capital punishment for a range of violent, lethal crimes.
The administration’s recent focus on the death penalty also encompasses other categories of offenders. Trump has previously stated, We will pass the death penalty for large-scale drug dealers, human traffickers, and anyone who kills a police officer.
