Krakow Massacre: Six Dead as Shooting Suspect Linked to Far-Right Ideology
A 25-year-old Polish man killed six people in Krakow's main square. Authorities investigate far-right ties and a family tragedy following the attack.
POLICY WIRE — Krakow, Poland — A deadly shooting claimed the lives of six people, including one British national, during a Saturday afternoon attack. The violence began at approximately 3 p.m. local time in the city’s central square.
The death toll consists of four women and two men. Additionally, at least 16 individuals suffered injuries, which includes two police officers, one of whom is currently fighting for their life in critical condition.
Law enforcement detained the 25-year-old suspect after he was wounded during an exchange of gunfire with armed officers. The gunman remains in the hospital with a serious condition.
Polish Interior Minister Marcin Kierwinski informed the press that the perpetrator was motivated by far-right ideologies. He noted that this ideological influence will be a primary focus of the ongoing investigation.
“Everything points to the fact that the shooter was influenced by far-right ideology, a matter that will also be subject to investigation,” Kierwinski stated.
Investigators are exploring whether the suspect acquired his weapons from his family residence. Kierwinski revealed that the man’s father owned several firearms.
“It looks like he had very radical views,” Kierwinski remarked. He further noted that numerous weapons were discovered in the suspect’s vehicle, and a search of the area continues.
The tragedy expanded when three bodies were discovered at the suspect’s home: two women and one man. Prime Minister Donald Tusk identified these victims as likely members of the shooter’s immediate family.
“It looks like they are members of his close family,” Tusk said, noting that the specific ages and relationships of the deceased have not yet been released.
Authorities are currently combing the residence, with Tusk expecting the discovery of a significant cache of arms. Kierwinski confirmed that both police and Internal Security Agency are present at the scene and the suspect’s home, adding that any supporters of the perpetrator should be detained very quickly.
