POLICY WIRE — City, Country — For the second week in a row, Hawaii Island, commonly known as the Big Island, faces the threat of Tropical Storm Moke, which is expected to bring heavy rain and strong winds.
The National Weather Service (NWS) issued a statement detailing the potential impact of the storm. “Residents should prepare for significant weather conditions, including heavy rainfall and strong gusts that could lead to localized flooding and power outages,” an NWS spokesperson said.
Local authorities have urged residents to take necessary precautions. “We advise everyone to secure loose objects, ensure that emergency kits are ready, and stay tuned to local news for updates,” said a county official.
Moke is the latest in a series of weather systems affecting the region. Last week, a similar storm brought considerable rain and wind to the island, causing minor disruptions but no major incidents.
Meteorologists predict that Moke will continue to intensify as it approaches the island. “We are monitoring the storm closely and will provide updates as conditions evolve,” said a representative from the Central Pacific Hurricane Center.
In response to the ongoing threats, local businesses have started to implement contingency plans. “We are adjusting our operations to ensure the safety of our employees and customers,” said a local business owner.
Emergency services are on high alert, with crews prepared to respond to any incidents that may arise. “Our teams are ready to deploy as needed to assist with any storm-related issues,” said a spokesperson for the Hawaii County Fire Department.
The storm is expected to impact the island throughout the week, with the most severe conditions anticipated in the coming days. Authorities have warned against unnecessary travel and encouraged residents to stay indoors if possible.
