POLICY WIRE — Gloucester, England — Highly respected assistant coach Trevor Woodman is set to conclude his tenure with Gloucester Rugby at the conclusion of the current season, transitioning to a new role within Connacht Rugby as their dedicated scrum coach.
Woodman, aged 49, has dedicated over a decade, specifically 12 years, to the coaching staff at Kingsholm. His return to the club in 2014 marked a significant period where he focused on developing academy talent and specializing in forward play, particularly the scrum.
A Distinguished Career at Kingsholm
Prior to his coaching contributions, Woodman enjoyed an illustrious playing career. The former England international prop and Rugby World Cup winner made 140 appearances for the “Cherry and Whites” before his retirement from playing in 2005.
His dual role as both a player and a coach has cemented his legacy at the club. This kind of transition from player to coach is not uncommon in professional sports, with many former athletes seeking to apply their experience in new capacities. “Trevor has been an immense servant of this club both as a player and a coach, so he’ll leave with nothing but respect and gratitude for his time here,” stated George Skivington, Gloucester’s Head of Rugby. “Our scrum has been strong under Trevor’s guidance – he’s done great work in that area.”
Skivington further acknowledged Woodman’s impending absence, adding, “He’ll be sorely missed, but we’ve got some great guys coming into the building too, which is exciting.”
New Chapter in Ireland
Woodman’s move to Connacht signifies a new chapter in his coaching journey, bringing his specialized expertise in scrummaging to the Irish province. His extensive experience is expected to significantly bolster Connacht’s forward pack.
