POLICY WIRE — Taipei, Taiwan — Taiwan’s proposed defense budget for next year, set to surpass T$1 trillion ($31.47 billion) for the first time, underscores the nation’s resolve to bolster its defenses, according to President Lai Ching-te. This significant financial commitment aims to demonstrate Taiwan’s dedication to enhancing its self-defense capabilities to the international community.

China, which claims Taiwan as part of its territory, has intensified military and political pressure in recent years to reinforce its assertions, which Taiwan firmly rejects. President Lai addressed military officers, emphasizing that improved defense preparations lead to greater security.

Continuously enhancing defense capabilities and deterrent power is essential for ensuring national security and regional peace, Lai stated. The upcoming defense budget illustrates Taiwan’s commitment to strengthening its self-defense abilities, he added.

The government plans to continue its defense self-reliance strategy, focusing on developing the military industrial sector, artificial intelligence, and unmanned vehicles to enhance Taiwan’s response capabilities to future challenges.

In a concurrent statement in Beijing, a spokesperson for China’s Taiwan Affairs Office criticized Lai and his administration for allegedly inciting cross-strait confrontation and misusing public funds. Spokesperson Zhang Han warned that Lai’s efforts to resist reunification through force are misguided and will bring disaster to Taiwan’s people.
