Thailand Launches Manhunt Following Fatal Attack on Soldiers in Deep South

POLICY WIRE — Bangkok, Thailand — Thai authorities announced on Thursday that they’re conducting a manhunt for individuals responsible for an attack in the country’s restive deep south region that resulted in the deaths of five soldiers and injuries to several civilians.

The incident occurred on Wednesday evening when approximately 10 assailants opened fire and threw pipe bombs at a security checkpoint near a residential area in Narathiwat province, according to the regional Internal Security Operations Command. The attackers fled the scene following the assault.

Six civilians sustained injuries during the attack, including a resident who was severely wounded. The soldiers were stationed at the checkpoint as part of ongoing security measures in the area, which has a history of insurgent activity.

Authorities have heightened security in the region — and are working to identify the perpetrators. The attack is the latest in a series of violent incidents in Thailand’s deep south, where a long-standing insurgency has led to numerous casualties over the years.

The Thai government has faced challenges in quelling the insurgency, which is driven by separatist movements seeking greater autonomy for the predominantly Muslim region.

In response to the attack, Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha urged security forces to intensify their efforts to maintain order and protect civilians. “We must ensure the safety of our people — and bring those responsible to justice,” he stated.
