POLICY WIRE — Houston, United States — A 34-year-old Texas man has been charged with murder following the discovery of his 73-year-old mother’s remains inside a duffel bag.
Arman Alexander Malik was taken into custody by the Harris County Sheriff’s Office after authorities uncovered the body during a welfare check on September 1. The incident occurred at a local residence where deputies were called due to concerns about Dyna Guadalupe Sorto De Malik’s well-being.

Deputies reportedly detected the smell of a decomposing body and discovered the remains wrapped in a bedsheet and rug, both stained with blood, inside the duffel bag. Blood was also found on the carpet and spattered on a dresser. Malik had visible dried blood under his fingernails and scratches on his hands. He was taken to a hospital for evaluation after being found at the scene.
Initially charged with tampering with evidence, Malik now faces a murder charge. Neighbors expressed shock over the incident, with one stating, “I cannot believe that happened right next door to me.” Malik’s legal team claims he suffers from psychological issues and requires medical care.
