Texas Executes Jamaal Howard Following Tennessee’s Failed Lethal Injection Attempt
Texas executes Jamaal Howard for a 2000 murder, marking the 30th US execution this year following a recent failed lethal injection attempt in Tennessee.
POLICY WIRE — Huntsville, Texas — Jamaal Howard, 46, was executed by lethal injection on Wednesday evening at the state prison in Huntsville. His death marks the 30th execution carried out in the United States this year and the first since Tennessee’s unsuccessful attempt to execute Christa Pike one week ago.
Howard was pronounced dead at 8:03 pm after receiving a fatal dose of pentobarbital. He had been convicted of the 2000 murder of 42-year-old Vickie Swartout during a convenience store robbery in Silsbee, a rural town located approximately 100 miles northeast of Houston.
Before the procedure began, the warden asked Howard for a final statement. Howard apologized to the victim’s family members who were observing from an adjacent room, stating, I wish that you accept my apology and I wish for your forgiveness. I’m sorry for what happened. I wish you can learn to forgive me one of these days.
He also expressed love for his family and friends, telling them he was in a good state of mind to find peace and the Lord. His final words were, “Hey, enjoy life, and peace to y’all.”
As the pentobarbital took effect, Howard gasped and took several breaths before making snoring sounds that gradually quieted. All movement ceased within 30 seconds, and he was officially pronounced dead 19 minutes later. His sister, who witnessed the event, became visibly distraught and had to be escorted from the room by corrections officers.

Legal representatives for Howard had attempted to block the execution by citing his alleged intellectual disability and raising concerns regarding the quality of the state’s execution drugs. Both the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals and the U.S. Supreme Court denied these motions without comment, allowing the execution to proceed.
The defense had drawn parallels to the case of Christa Pike, 50, who survived two doses of pentobarbital on September 30. While Pike remained unconscious at a hospital following the attempt, her lawyers confirmed she was awake and speaking by Tuesday. Tennessee Governor Bill Lee has since suspended the state’s remaining scheduled executions for the year.
Evidence used during Howard’s trial included surveillance footage showing him shooting Swartout once in the chest. At the time of the crime, Howard was 20 years old and fled the scene with $114 and a carton of cigarettes.
Texas has now executed seven individuals in 2026, with two additional executions planned for later this year. Florida currently leads the nation with 16 executions in 2026.
