POLICY WIRE — Gwinnett County, Georgia — Sports journalist and television personality Taylor Rooks, through her foundation, has announced a significant initiative that has relieved over $2 million in medical debt for local residents.
The Taylor Rooks Foundation, in collaboration with the non-profit organization Undue Medical Debt, has successfully eliminated more than $2 million in medical obligations. This impactful effort directly benefits over 1,800 individuals residing in Rooks’ childhood hometown of Gwinnett County, Georgia.
Rooks, a prominent studio host for Amazon Prime’s NBA coverage, expressed her deep personal connection to the issue of medical debt. She shared how her younger sister’s experience with Type 1 Diabetes provided a firsthand understanding of the overwhelming nature of accumulating medical bills, often making individuals feel like they are “drowning” and without recourse.
Addressing Systemic Medical Debt
Medical debt continues to pose a substantial, often unseen, burden on countless American families. According to a 2018 Survey of Income and Program Participation (SIPP), approximately 28 percent of households with a Black householder reported having medical debt, a figure substantially higher than the 17 percent found among white non-Hispanic households.
Furthermore, a 2022 study conducted by the National Consumer Law Center highlighted that households in the Southern United States, a region with the largest Black population, carry a disproportionately higher amount of medical debt compared to other areas across the nation.
“This kind of relief has real impact. It eases financial stresses that many carry with them silently and gives people the ability to focus on their health, their families and everything that comes next.”
Taylor Rooks Foundation’s Vision for Equity
Launched in 2025, the Taylor Rooks Foundation is dedicated to fostering “a future rooted in equity, where everyone has the resources to not just survive but to build a better tomorrow.” Rooks stated that her organization will continue its vital work by expanding access, removing barriers, and creating tangible opportunities for individuals to rebuild their financial stability.
An emotional social media post by Rooks underscored the profound difference this initiative makes in people’s lives. She conveyed sincere gratitude to all the supporters who contribute to the foundation’s mission, setting a powerful example for future community impact.
