State Trooper Charged in Fatal Shooting of Sheriff’s Captain Amid Love Triangle Drama

POLICY WIRE — Hope Mills, North Carolina — A North Carolina state trooper has been charged with first-degree murder following the fatal shooting of a sheriff’s office captain in a case linked to a romantic entanglement.
Trooper Nekime Oxendine was indicted by a grand jury on Wednesday for the death of Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office Captain Adam Bean, who was found shot outside a home in Hope Mills on March 27. The location was reportedly connected to a woman with whom both men had previously had relationships.
Bean, 42, had served the sheriff’s office for nearly two decades and was discovered in the front yard with injuries to his chest and left arm. According to search warrants, the woman initially dated Oxendine, a state highway patrol officer with 18 years of service, before moving on to Bean. She later reconnected with Oxendine, though tensions remained over her relationship with the sheriff’s captain.

Text messages from 2022 revealed Oxendine repeatedly questioned the woman about her interactions with Bean. One message read, “I see u have been talking to Adam!!! Best Wishes!!!” and included a threat to get ready too. Despite their reconciliation, Oxendine continued to express doubts about her commitment, even as she sought to build a future with him.
The tension escalated in the days leading up to the shooting. Bean had asked the woman to meet at his house, but she ultimately refused and stopped responding to his messages. He then went to her home despite her warnings. Authorities were told that Bean arrived and became upset upon seeing Oxendine’s truck outside. Oxendine reportedly exited the house with a gun, fired into the ground, and then shot Bean multiple times.
The woman was performing CPR on Bean when law enforcement arrived, but he succumbed to his injuries in the front yard. Oxendine was placed on administrative leave and is being held without bond until his next court appearance in November.
