President Trump Signals Imminent U.S.-India Trade Deal with New Framework
President Donald Trump confirms the U.S. and India are nearing a unique trade agreement, signaling a shift in bilateral economic relations and policy.
POLICY WIRE — Washington, U.S. — President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, that the United States and India are nearing the completion of a new trade agreement. Speaking from the Oval Office, the President indicated that the upcoming pact will differ significantly from previous arrangements.
When asked about the status of the negotiations, President Trump confirmed that both nations are eager to finalize the terms, stating, They want to make a deal. We’re going to make a deal. Pretty close, yeah. He emphasized that the structure of this agreement will be a much different kind of deal than we’ve done.
The President’s comments coincide with a diplomatic visit to India by Secretary of State Marco Rubio. During his trip, Rubio has been focused on bolstering bilateral ties across several key sectors, including energy, technology, defense, and trade, while also fostering stronger people-to-people connections.
Recent high-level discussions have paved the way for these developments. Earlier this month, Indian Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal held meetings with U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer in both Milwaukee and Washington to refine the details of the proposed agreement.
Although both countries had previously announced the finalization of a framework for the first phase of a bilateral trade agreement in February, shifting tariff conditions in the United States have necessitated further rounds of negotiation to update the pact.
