POLICY WIRE — Copenhagen, Denmark — A new study has found that exposure to Tylenol during pregnancy may be associated with differences in the reproductive organs of female infants, including smaller ovarian and uterine volumes and fewer ovarian follicles.
The research, led by Margit Bistrup Fischer from Rigshospitalet in Copenhagen, emphasizes that while these physical variations were observed, they do not confirm a direct cause or long-term impact on fertility. The findings, published in Human Reproduction Open, highlight the need for further long-term studies to assess potential effects on adult reproductive health.

Researchers evaluated 302 three-month-old female infants, tracking maternal Tylenol use throughout pregnancy. Of those, 92 were exposed before 17 weeks, 67 after 17 weeks, and 143 had no prenatal exposure. The study found that infants exposed to Tylenol in the womb showed, on average, a 40% reduction in ovarian volume, a 13% smaller uterine volume, and 23% fewer ovarian follicles. Additional data from 1,210 girls followed into adolescence also showed similar patterns of smaller reproductive organs linked to prenatal Tylenol use.
