Anthropic Researcher Warns of Over 10% Risk AI Could Eliminate Humanity
Anthropic researcher warns of over 10% risk AI could eliminate humanity, citing urgent need for global oversight.
POLICY WIRE — London, United Kingdom — A senior researcher at Anthropic, a leading artificial intelligence company, has raised concerns that there is more than a 10% chance AI could lead to the extinction of humanity within the next ten years.
Evan Hubinger, the company’s Alignment Science Lead, expressed these fears in a public post on X, stating, I personally think it is >10% within the next decade. He added that while Anthropic is making efforts, the company does not yet have a clear strategy to address the risks of superintelligence, which refers to AI that surpasses human cognitive abilities.

This warning came after another researcher, Jacob Coxon, resigned from Anthropic, criticizing both OpenAI and Anthropic for their lack of responsible behavior. Coxon claimed that both companies are rushing toward self-improving AI without considering the potential dangers. Meanwhile, Anthropic has kept its latest AI model, Claude Mythos 5.1, confidential from international security agencies, including the U.K.’s AI Security Institute, which is seen as a global leader in AI risk assessment.
