The Claim
In late October 2026, a viral screenshot began circulating across Facebook, purportedly showing a Truth Social post from Donald Trump. The image claimed that the former president had preemptively declared victory for all Republican candidates in the 2026 midterm elections, stating, “Why are we wasting time counting ballots? Everybody already knows the Republicans WON the 2026 midterms in a historic landslide!”
The graphic, which appeared to be a direct capture of a social media interface, suggested that Trump was officially declaring victory for every Senate, House, and gubernatorial race nationwide. The post was widely shared in various Facebook groups, prompting significant public concern and numerous inquiries regarding the authenticity of the statement.
The Details & Investigation
Our investigation confirms that the screenshot is a complete fabrication. The image originated from a Facebook page titled “Branson Area Breaking News,” an entity that frequently produces content labeled as satire or parody. Despite the page’s self-identification, the screenshot was stripped of its context and shared across social media platforms as a genuine political statement, effectively transitioning from satire into the realm of disinformation.
To verify the authenticity of the claim, Policy Wire consulted “Trump’s Truth,” an exhaustive online archive that tracks all posts made by the former president on Truth Social, including those that have been deleted. A search for the specific date of October 26, 2026, yielded no such post. The only record of Trump using the word “midterms” on that date was a post regarding a reward for reporting voter fraud, which bears no resemblance to the fabricated text.
Furthermore, forensic analysis of the screenshot reveals clear visual discrepancies. The profile picture of Donald Trump used in the fabricated image features a rounder facial structure and a different number of stars compared to his verified Truth Social profile. These inconsistencies are common in content generated by artificial intelligence tools, which the “Branson Area Breaking News” page is known to utilize for its content creation.
This incident serves as a textbook example of how disinformation campaigns exploit the lack of critical verification in social media sharing. While the originators claim the content is satire, the lack of clear labeling during the viral spread constitutes a coordinated effort to deceive the public. By presenting a fabricated quote as a legitimate political declaration, the actors involved successfully misled a significant portion of the electorate, necessitating this formal correction.
The Verdict
The claim that Donald Trump posted “Why are we wasting time counting ballots?” is FALSE. The screenshot is a fabricated image created by a page that utilizes AI to generate deceptive content. There is no record of this post on any official platform, and the visual evidence confirms the image was digitally manipulated.
This report classifies the viral spread of this image as DISINFORMATION, as it was deliberately designed to mimic authentic political communication to influence public perception of the 2026 midterm election process.
