POLICY WIRE — New York, United States — Newly released police bodycam footage captures the moment officers arrested Luigi Mangione at a McDonald’s in Pennsylvania, linking him to the shooting death of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in Manhattan.
The videos, obtained from Mangione’s December 9, 2024, arrest in Altoona, show officers confronting the suspect, who was wearing a face mask and ski hat, and asking for his identity. One officer confirms the suspect’s identity, while another searches his belongings and finds a gun cartridge, suggesting the arrest was successful.
Mangione, an Ivy League-educated man from a wealthy Maryland family, was taken into custody five days after Thompson was killed. He has since pleaded guilty to federal stalking charges and faces life in prison for the murder. The videos were unsealed by a Manhattan judge after a court hearing, with parts shown during the trial as his lawyers attempted to suppress evidence.
