POLICY WIRE — Rabat, Morocco — Moroccan police have detained over 100 migrants attempting to reach the Spanish enclave of Ceuta, officials confirmed today. The arrests come in the wake of a social media campaign that urged individuals to migrate to Ceuta, just weeks after multiple fatalities occurred during previous crossing attempts.
Authorities reported that the migrants were apprehended while trying to navigate the heavily guarded border. The campaign on social media platforms had garnered significant attention, leading to a surge in migration attempts.
The recent crackdown follows a series of incidents where migrants have perished while trying to cross into Ceuta. Local and international organizations have expressed concern over the dangerous conditions faced by those attempting the journey.
Spanish and Moroccan authorities continue to collaborate on border security measures to prevent unauthorized crossings. The situation underscores the ongoing challenges faced by European nations in managing migration flows from Africa.
