Nicolas Cage Faces Homelessness After Massive Sinkhole Swallows $10.5M Malibu Mansion
Actor Nicolas Cage reveals he is living in hotels after a coastal sinkhole devastated his $10.5M Malibu home. He battles to save the property.
POLICY WIRE — Malibu, California — Actor Nicolas Cage has disclosed he is currently residing in various hotels after a catastrophic sinkhole caused severe damage to his $10.5 million oceanfront estate.
The 62-year-old performer saw his four-level property ravaged by intense coastal erosion in September. A massive void consumed his driveway and subsequently expanded toward the entrance of the multi-story residence.
During an appearance at LA Comic Con on October 31, Cage provided a candid update on his living situation when asked about Halloween festivities. He admitted, “I’m currently a little bit homeless.”
The actor explained that because something happened to his Malibu home, he has been staying in hotels, which prevented him from enjoying normal trick-or-treaters at his residence that night.
Despite the displacement, the Spider-Noir star mentioned plans taking his four-year-old daughter, August, trick-or-treating in Santa Monica. He also intended to watch Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 horror film The Shining once she was tucked into bed.
Cage is currently making efforts to preserve the oceanfront property, which he acquired in 2024. According to Page Six, the National Treasure star quickly filed three permits with local officials to combat the structural damage.
The sinkhole has grown significantly since its initial 30-square-foot size at the side of the lot. It has moved toward the front door, swallowing fences, ladders, and portable toilets utilized by construction crews.
The entertainer secured an emergency building permit which allowed him to place sandbags against the beach and the home’s exterior to protect against waves and halt further erosion. Other permits were granted for removing asphalt debris from the hole to prepare for soil sampling and the installation of shoring.
In addition to the destroyed driveway, the event ruptured both a gas and water line. This forced the Southern California Gas Company to cut off fuel service to the area, leading to an evacuation order for neighboring properties.
A social media update from the City of Malibu stated that a local emergency was declared following the sinkhole at Sea Level Drive. The proclamation, issued on September 8, 2026, was made with the LA County Fire Department and Sheriff’s Department due to safety concerns as the expanding hole blocked access for residents and emergency responders.
Authorities had warned that conditions would likely deteriorate due to forecasted high tides and rain brought by Hurricane Marie.
