POLICY WIRE — Los Angeles, United States — The Los Angeles District Attorney’s office has confirmed it will not pursue the death penalty against Nick Reiner in connection with the fatal stabbings of his parents.

DA Nathan Hochman stated that after a comprehensive evaluation of the case, including input from the victims’ family and consideration of both aggravating and mitigating factors, the decision was made to forgo capital punishment. He said the maximum sentence Reiner could receive is life without parole.

The 33-year-old Reiner faces two counts of first-degree murder for the December 2025 killings of his father, Rob Reiner, and mother, Michele Singer Reiner, at their Los Angeles home. A massage therapist had arrived for an appointment but found the house empty. The couple’s daughter later discovered her father’s body and alerted authorities, leading to Reiner’s arrest hours later near the University of Southern California.
