Reports indicate that the missile, which was fired into Iran, caused significant civilian deaths and widespread destruction in the city of Lamerd on February 28, 2026.
According to a detailed analysis by the conflict monitor Airwars, three missiles struck Lamerd, resulting in the deaths of at least 21 civilians, including seven children. The missiles detonated above a sports complex and two residential areas, with lethal effects extending up to 50 meters from the detonation points and causing damage over three times that distance.
The PrSM is designed to explode in midair, dispersing tens of thousands of dense tungsten pellets in all directions. This characteristic was confirmed by the blast patterns observed in Lamerd, where buildings, streets, and vehicles showed extensive damage consistent with the missile’s capabilities.
Despite the U.S. military’s confirmation of firing PrSMs into Iran, it has denied targeting Lamerd. The intended target remains unclear, though an Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps compound is situated nearby. Weapons experts, including former military officials, have advised against using the PrSM in densely populated areas due to its wide-ranging lethal effects.
Airwars, a London-based nonprofit, used satellite images, videos, and other open-source materials to map the damage and estimate the blast radius. The Associated Press verified these findings, further highlighting the missile’s destructive potential.

Lockheed Martin has not disclosed the exact impact radius of the PrSM. However, the company has released an animated video demonstrating a PrSM blast.
