POLICY WIRE — Santa Fe, New Mexico — The state of New Mexico has initiated legal proceedings against the Department of Justice (DOJ) and Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche, alleging that federal authorities have obstructed its independent investigation into the sex crimes committed by the late financier Jeffrey Epstein.
In the lawsuit filed on [specific date], New Mexico Attorney General Hector Balderas claims that the DOJ and Blanche have impeded the state’s efforts to uncover the full extent of Epstein’s criminal activities within its jurisdiction. The complaint seeks to compel federal cooperation and lift any barriers preventing the state from pursuing justice for Epstein’s victims.
“The state of New Mexico has a duty to seek justice for the victims of Jeffrey Epstein’s heinous crimes,” Balderas stated. “We won’t allow federal overreach to hinder our efforts to hold wrongdoers accountable.”
The DOJ has yet to issue a formal response to the allegations. However, a spokesperson for the department indicated that federal authorities are committed to a thorough and comprehensive investigation into Epstein’s activities, suggesting that state-level inquiries might be redundant or disruptive.
Epstein, a wealthy financier with ties to prominent political and business figures, was accused of running a sex trafficking ring involving underage girls. He died by suicide in a federal detention facility in August 2019 while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges.
This legal clash underscores the tensions between state and federal authorities when it comes to high-profile criminal investigations. New Mexico’s lawsuit aims to assert its jurisdictional rights and ensure that all Epstein-related crimes are thoroughly investigated.
