Moroccan Authorities Detain Nearly 300 Migrants Near Ceuta

POLICY WIRE — Rabat, Morocco — Moroccan security forces have detained nearly 300 migrants attempting to reach the Spanish enclave of Ceuta via land and sea routes, according to officials.

The operation, which took place over the past several days, involved coordinated efforts by both land and maritime units to intercept and arrest the migrants. Authorities reported that the migrants were from various sub-Saharan African countries.

Ceuta, one of Spain’s two enclaves on the northern coast of Africa, has been a focal point for migrant attempts to enter Europe. The Spanish government has increased border security in recent years in response to the rising number of migrant crossings.

The Moroccan Interior Ministry stated that the detainees will be processed according to national and international laws governing migration and asylum.
