POLICY WIRE — Seattle, USA — An unusual incident unfolded during a recent game, captivating baseball fans when Seattle Mariners right-hander Logan Gilbert made an astonishing catch, albeit with an unconventional method.
A Peculiar Play on the Mound
In the opening inning of Wednesday’s matchup against the Athletics, a scorching 107.8 mph line drive, hit by Carlos Cortes, propelled directly towards Gilbert. Before the pitcher could react conventionally, the formidable hit found an unexpected resting place, lodging itself securely inside his jersey, much to his visible bewilderment.
The visual spectacle quickly circulated, leaving many spectators questioning if this constituted a legitimate out, given the ball never touched the ground.
Understanding MLB’s Definition of a ‘Catch’
Despite the ball never making contact with the field, the play was not officially recognized as an out. According to the official MLB Rulebook, a “catch” is explicitly defined as a fielder securing possession of a ball in flight using only their hand or glove, and then firmly holding it.
Rule 2.00 (Catch): A CATCH is the act of a fielder in getting secure possession in his hand or glove of a ball in flight and firmly holding it; providing he does not use his cap, protector, pocket or any other part of his uniform in getting possession.
The regulations are clear: a player cannot utilize their cap, protective gear, pocket, or any part of their uniform to gain possession. Such intricacies often spark discussions among fans and analysts about player actions and interpretations, much like ongoing debates about player roles and versatility in baseball, for instance, the recent speculation surrounding Aaron Judge’s potential shift to third base.
Impact on the Mariners’ Inning
Consequently, the umpire ruled the play a single for Cortes, leading to loaded bases with no outs. This pivotal moment proved costly for Gilbert, as two runs subsequently scored.
One run came from a sacrifice fly by Tyler Soderstrom, and another from an RBI single hit by Jeff McNeil, which was compounded by a fielding error from center fielder Julio Rodríguez.
By the end of his outing, Gilbert completed four innings, allowing six hits and three earned runs. He also issued two walks and recorded three strikeouts, accumulating 89 pitches in his performance.
