POLICY WIRE — Kolkata, India — A growing number of women in India are expressing heightened suspicion after being secretly recorded by strangers using Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses, prompting legal action against the tech giant over its privacy measures.

Yamini, a 35-year-old professor from Kolkata, was approached by a man on a June evening while walking home. She initially thought she was in danger, unaware that the encounter was being captured by his smart glasses. The video, which later appeared on Instagram with a misspelled caption, went viral with 2.3 million views.

The incident has led to legal action by the Internet Freedom Foundation on Yamini’s behalf, demanding removal of the video, disclosure of the device, and Rs20.5 million in damages. This is the second legal notice sent to Meta over similar cases, including one involving a Delhi man who was filmed without his knowledge, with the video receiving nearly half a million views.
