POLICY WIRE — Hartford, Connecticut — A former senior Connecticut budget official has become a fugitive in Greece after fleeing the United States ahead of his sentencing for corruption, according to federal prosecutors and his lawyer.

Konstantinos “Kosta” Diamantis, who previously served as a state representative and deputy budget director under Connecticut’s Democratic governor, was convicted last year of extorting private contractors for thousands of dollars in bribes between 2018 and 2021. He allegedly accepted cash in exchange for favoring companies on school construction contracts.

Diamantis, who holds dual U.S. and Greek citizenship, reportedly traveled by boat from Florida to the Bahamas, then flew to London before reaching Greece. Federal prosecutors said he obtained a Greek passport despite surrendering his U.S. one. His defense attorney confirmed that Diamantis is in Greece and will not attend his scheduled sentencing on September 30.
