JD Vance Criticizes Ambassadors for Texting Donors for Financial Help
Vice President JD Vance condemns U.S. ambassador's text messages to donor for financial assistance, sparking controversy.
POLICY WIRE — Washington, D.C. — Vice President JD Vance has expressed disapproval of government officials engaging in transactions that could be seen as selling access, following a report alleging that U.S. Ambassador to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle sent text messages to a donor requesting money to settle her credit card debt.
The Wall Street Journal reported that days before her Senate confirmation hearing on July 9, 2025, Guilfoyle, the former fiancée of Donald Trump Jr., asked Eric Deters, who was seeking attention from the Trump administration for personal legal and tax issues, to send $100,000 to pay off her American Express balance. Guilfoyle’s lawyer denied the authenticity of the texts, according to the report.

Vance, when asked about the situation during a press conference, said, “Obviously, I don’t love that.” He added that he would prefer to hear the full story before offering a definitive opinion. Meanwhile, CNN political contributor Scott Jennings called the texts “extremely unseemly,” urging transparency from Guilfoyle and warning that such behavior could damage her position of trust within the government.
