Iraqi Court Hands Down Life Sentences to Six French Islamic State Members
An Iraqi court has sentenced six French nationals to life in prison and a seventh to 15 years for Islamic State membership following a transfer from Syria.
POLICY WIRE — Baghdad, Iraq — An Iraqi court issued significant prison sentences on Tuesday to seven French nationals convicted of belonging to the Islamic State militant group. Six of the defendants received life imprisonment, while a seventh individual was sentenced to 15 years behind bars.
The proceedings, which took place in Baghdad, were observed by a witness who confirmed the verdicts were delivered under the nation’s counterterrorism statutes. Authorities classified the group as highly dangerous, citing the direct threat they posed to Iraq’s national security.
The six life sentences were notably commuted from potential death penalties, a decision attributed to the defendants’ youth, which provides them with an opportunity to eventually rebuild their lives. These men were part of a larger cohort of 47 French citizens who were moved from detention facilities in northeast Syria to Iraq in 2025.
The transfer of these suspects was facilitated through a coordinated arrangement involving Iraqi officials and United States forces. This legal action marks a significant development in the ongoing prosecution of foreign fighters who were captured following the collapse of the Islamic State’s territorial control.
