Iran’s Supreme Leader Surfaces via Letter as Tensions Escalate at UN General Assembly

POLICY WIRE — New York, USA — Iran’s supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, has released a handwritten letter addressed to the military, marking his first public communication since he disappeared from view following the death of his father in US-Israeli strikes on February 28.

In the document dated August 1, Khamenei commended IRGC Aerospace Force commander Majid Mousavi for a submitted report and urged him to maintain supply chain efforts. The leader also included a personal note, stating, “Taking care of your dear life and all the brothers is my emphatic request.”

While the authenticity of the letter remains unverified, it serves as a potential proof of life for the leader, who has relied on electronic communications or intermediaries since the February attacks. This development coincides with a volatile week at the United Nations in New York, where Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian delivered a defiant address.

Pezeshkian condemned what he described as a bullying mentality from Donald Trump, who recently threatened to “annihilate” the Islamic Republic. During his speech, the Iranian president displayed images of children killed in a strike on a primary school in Minab, insisting that Iran would not succumb to the language of force.

Diplomatic friction also extended to the Israeli delegation, as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu prepared to address the UN. Netanyahu has publicly targeted New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani, labeling him a supporter of Hamas after the mayor suggested the Israeli leader should be arrested as a war criminal.

Meanwhile, French President Emmanuel Macron used his final UN address to criticize ongoing violence in the West Bank, asserting that Hamas has never operated in the region. His comments drew a sharp rebuke from Netanyahu, who dismissed the claims as grotesque absurdity.

The Canadian government also faced scrutiny from Tehran, with the Iranian foreign ministry criticizing Prime Minister Mark Carney for characterizing Trump’s threats as merely the language of war. Spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei warned that those relying on American influence would eventually face the reality of their situation.

Maritime security remains a critical concern as shipping data shows ten commodity vessels transited the Strait of Hormuz yesterday, though some ships continue to disable transponders. The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations reported that a cargo ship was struck by an unknown projectile in the strait, resulting in two casualties and forcing the crew to abandon the burning vessel.

The incident has prompted the Forward Seamen’s Union to petition Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for naval escorts. The union highlighted the death of 26-year-old sailor Suraj Yadav, who was killed when his vessel, the MV Cape Dao, was struck twice while traveling from the UAE to India.
