The U.S. National Hurricane Center reported that Polo had maximum sustained winds of 130 mph (215 kph) and could strengthen further, potentially reaching Category 5 status by Tuesday or Wednesday. The storm was moving east-southeast at 5 mph (7 kph) and was expected to shift northwest, skirting the Mexican coast for several days.
