POLICY WIRE — Las Vegas, USA — Authorities are investigating the discovery of apparent human remains in Lake Mead, as the reservoir’s water levels have reached a historic low. The skeletal remains, which include what appears to be a human jaw with teeth attached, were reported by a witness.
The discovery was made as drought conditions continue to affect the region, leading to significantly reduced water levels in the reservoir. Officials from the National Park Service and local law enforcement are working to determine the origin and identity of the remains.
“We received a call about unusual items visible due to the low water levels,” said a spokesperson for the National Park Service. “Upon investigation, we found what appears to be human remains, including a jaw with teeth.”
The exact circumstances surrounding the discovery are still under investigation. Authorities are examining the area for any additional evidence that could provide clues about the identity of the remains and the possible cause of death.
Lake Mead, the largest reservoir in the United States by maximum water capacity, has been severely impacted by prolonged drought and increasing water demand. The current low water levels have exposed various items previously submerged, including boats and other debris.
This is not the first time human remains have been found in the lake. In recent years, several sets of remains have been discovered as water levels continue to drop.
The investigation is ongoing, and authorities have not yet released further details about the identity or possible cause of death of the individual whose remains were found. The public is urged to contact local authorities with any information that might assist in the investigation.
