Hegseth Faces Backlash for Alleged ‘Body Shaming’ of Cadet Instructor Amid Pentagon Turmoil

POLICY WIRE — Washington, D.C. — Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has come under scrutiny for allegedly ‘body shaming’ a youth cadet instructor. Hegseth posted an image of the instructor from the Vernon Cadet Training Center in British Columbia on social media, which quickly drew backlash.

The image showed the instructor presenting a medal to a cadet, accompanied by a Canadian flag emoji and the caption: “(this is real)”. This post prompted immediate criticism, with a Canadian veteran commenting: Wow. The Secretary of Defense is body shaming cadet groups. A youth group. This is not a military unit. They are kids looking for adventure, testing themselves, and aligning with service values. Don’t be a Pete.

Amy Coplan, a philosophy professor at California State University, Fullerton, questioned Hegseth’s actions, asking: What is your point? You’re the Secretary of Defense, and our country is currently engaged in a war. Why are you posting what appears to be some sort of insulting tweet about teenagers in Canada? Is bullying Canadian teenagers more important than attending to our ever-deteriorating situation in Iran? Is bullying Canadian teenagers ever an appropriate activity for the Secretary of Defense? Or any rational adult?

Former Republican congressman Adam Kinzinger also weighed in, stating: “Literally they’re kids. This is a cadet program and our a** hat of a Secdef is making fun of children. MAGA males are betas who have to punch down to feel big.”

Hegseth’s post comes at a time when the Department of Defense is dealing with the resignation of Army Secretary Dan Driscoll, the latest in a series of high-level departures amid reported tensions with the secretary. This incident also occurs against the backdrop of President Trump’s recent trade dispute with Canada, which has seen the imposition of 50 percent tariffs on various Canadian exports.

In a related move, Trump has attempted to rename Lake Ontario via executive order, urging tech companies like Apple to change its name to “Lake America” on their mapping services. This decision has been met with derision in Canada, particularly from Ontario Premier Doug Ford, who erected a billboard on the lake’s shoreline declaring: “Lake Ontario. Now and Always.” Ford criticized Trump’s action on ABC News’s This Week, saying: I don’t see the purpose. It was something out of Saturday Night Live when he signed documents saying ‘change it to Lake America.’ No one is going to call it Lake America.
