POLICY WIRE — Georgetown, Guyana — An ageing ferry carrying more than 100 passengers capsized off the coast of Guyana, with 67 individuals rescued and authorities continuing the search for 66 missing passengers, officials confirmed on Sunday.

The ferry, MV Barima, departed from Georgetown, Guyana’s capital, on Saturday afternoon with 133 people aboard. Its destination was Port Kaituma, an inland town in the oil-rich Essequibo region. The vessel traveled along the Atlantic coast before the incident occurred.

“The ferry capsized due to unforeseen circumstances,” said a spokesperson from Guyana’s Maritime Administration. “Rescue teams are working around the clock to locate the missing passengers.”

The rescued individuals were transported to nearby medical facilities for evaluation — and treatment. The cause of the capsizing remains under investigation.
