As time passed during economic hardships, increased hostilities, and changing international atmospheres, the commitment and hard work of Pakistanis settled abroad remained a strong pillar. The Chief of Army Staff paid tribute to the Pakistanis abroad during his recent visit to the United States. Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, while paying tribute to Pakistanis living abroad, expressed intelligent and visionary leadership in his remarks which was beyond mere thanks. He mentioned Pakistanis abroad as proud partners in building towards a stronger, more united Pakistan.
“At the first Overseas Pakistanis Convention, General Asim Munir, Chief of Army Staff, outlined the diaspora’s crucial role in Pakistan’s development by stating, ‘We will lift Pakistan and make it progress as was conceived by the founder of the nation.’ He assured that would not let anyone hinder the progress of this nation. “They take Pakistan to a world stage, and their feelings toward Pakistan have been absolutely commendable,” the COAS said while commending the patriotism of the Pakistanis living abroad. Opposing the negative connotation of the term “brain drain,” he responded by saying that it is actually “brain gain“; a phenomenon which helps build the nation.”
These Pakistanis living abroad are not just migrants. They are the hidden heroes of Pakistan’s economy and the faces of its goodwill across the world. In 2023 alone, remittances sent by them crossed $27 billion, helping countless families survive and supporting the country’s financial reserves. This money helps Pakistan reduce its budget pressure and brings in much-needed foreign exchange. Yet, as Field Marshal Asim Munir rightly said, their contribution goes far beyond numbers. They build Pakistan’s image in the world and help shape its reputation through their values, success, and integrity.
Whether working in Silicon Valley, the NHS, or serving in international organizations, Pakistanis abroad are playing important roles. Their work reflects not just personal success but also lifts the pride of their homeland. The Army Chief’s words showed that he understands and admires national strength which comes not only from resources or territory, but also from people, even those living far from home.
Field Marshal Asim Munir reminded the nation that politicians may run governments, but the soul of a nation is kept alive by dreamers and builders, as well as the people. The shift marks a change in outreach-the diaspora will now be approached not just by lofty slogans, but also through meaningful engagement. This shows a commitment to reaching out to Pakistanis living abroad-as many have done before him-and not as strangers in the journey of a nation. The warm welcome in Washington, D.C., constituted more than mere formality; this was a moment of connection. For the overseas community, seeing their top military leader acknowledge their role gave them a sense of pride and belonging.
This connection becomes even more meaningful during tough times. Pakistan is facing many challenges, economic struggles, regional pressures, and security concerns. In such moments, the strength of the diaspora becomes a major asset. Their belief in Pakistan’s future, their defense of its image, and their contributions to its economy act as a powerful force. As the famous historian Ibn Khaldun said, a nation’s power is not only in its weapons but in the unity of its people. Pakistanis abroad prove every day with their loyalty, hard work, and love for the country.
The future was another aspect of the Army Chief’s discourse. He urged Pakistanis living abroad to contribute to the development of their nation. With numerous new prospects in sectors including tourism, green energy, agriculture, and digital technology, Pakistan is currently making economic improvement. Many diasporas possess the knowledge and assets necessary to support the expansion of these industries. More than expressing gratitude, Field Marshal Asim Munir’s address was a call to work together to create the future.
His sincerity was felt deeply by the people he met. From students and doctors to engineers and business owners, the response was the same, pride in their roots and happiness that their homeland values their role. In a world where many countries ignore or forget their overseas communities, Pakistan’s military leadership is showing a different path. It is building bridges with those who may live far away, but still carry Pakistan in their hearts.
This kind of respect is what modern patriotism looks like. Love for one’s country today means more than just living within its borders. It includes sharing knowledge, sending support, and standing up for Pakistan wherever one is. By embracing this wider view of nationhood, Pakistan is building a strong network of supporters around the world, from Rawalpindi to Riyadh, from Karachi to Chicago.
The Army has always played a big role in building the nation, whether in peace or in crisis. This time, by honoring overseas Pakistanis, it has shown that its mission is not just to protect land, but also to protect the dreams and dignity of every Pakistani. The COAS’s visit to the United States, and his open interaction with the diaspora, made this very clear. As Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah once said, “With faith, discipline, and selfless devotion to duty, there is nothing worthwhile that you cannot achieve.” The diaspora has lived by these words for decades. Now, they are being invited to do more, to contribute their knowledge, energy, and love for Pakistan in even greater ways.
The tribute given by Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir was more than symbolic. It was genuine, thoughtful, and important. It showed that the Pakistan Army truly values its people across the globe. It also presented a hopeful vision, one where every Pakistani, no matter where they live, is part of the country’s journey toward a brighter future. With such unity and leadership, Pakistan is not rising alone, it is rising with the strength of all its sons and daughters around the world.
