POLICY WIRE — Hormuz, Iran — Iran has announced that four oil tankers encountered mines while navigating the Strait of Hormuz, resulting in fires aboard the vessels. These incidents come as fears of maritime strikes intensify following the recent U.S. midterm elections.
Security sources indicated that at least one tanker was targeted by limpet mines. In a related incident, a rare speedboat attack reportedly ignited a fire within the engine room of a vessel in the critical waterway.
In response to the emergency, authorities from Oman successfully rescued 25 individuals from a burning oil tanker located in the strait.
