POLICY WIRE — Newport Beach, California — A pair of local fishermen performed a life-saving rescue on Friday after discovering a cruise ship employee drifting in the Pacific Ocean nearly 20 miles from the shore.
Sean Norton and Grant Garrett were out pursuing marlin near Catalina Island early on Friday morning when they spotted the man. By midday, the two men had successfully pulled the individual from the deep waters onto their vessel.
Garrett recalled the moment the captain saw the figure in the water, noting he immediately ordered the boat to stop and retrieve all fishing lines to assist.
Norton explained that he and Garrett each grabbed the man’s arm to haul him onto the boat, observing that the survivor was in a state of total shock.
Once the man regained consciousness, he identified himself as a pianist working aboard the Ovation of the Seas, a 14-deck Royal Caribbean cruise ship.
Norton shared the survivor’s first words to him were an expression of gratitude and an admission that he believed he would perish.
Following the rescue, the crew broadcast an emergency maritime signal, which prompted a team of Newport Beach lifeguards to provide further assistance.
Battalion Chief Adam Yacenda stated the rescue took place between 15 and 20 miles offshore in the open ocean. Authorities suspect the man may have fallen from the ship roughly nine hours prior to his discovery.
The U.S. Coast Guard is currently investigating the circumstances of the overboard incident. The pianist, whose identity remains undisclosed, was transported to a hospital and is expected to survive the ordeal.
Norton remarked that the 76-degree water temperatures likely helped the man survive the ten hours in the water, noting that in a different season, the outcome would have been fatal.
