POLICY WIRE — Detroit, USA — Abdul El-Sayed, the Democratic candidate for Michigan’s U.S. Senate seat, emphasized the importance of party cohesion ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.

El-Sayed reiterated his call for a debate with his opponent, highlighting the stark differences between their platforms. The two have already scheduled a debate for October.

The spotlight turned to El-Sayed following comments made by left-wing influencer Hasan Piker, who had previously supported El-Sayed during the Democratic primary. Piker’s remarks about Israel and Jewish Americans, as well as his criticism of state Sen. Jeremy Moss, sparked controversy.

Moss responded firmly, stating he would not be instructed by an outsider on the beliefs of Michigan’s Jewish community. El-Sayed clarified that only he and his campaign spokespersons represent his campaign.

Democratic Rep. Hilary Scholten also expressed reservations, indicating she has yet to endorse El-Sayed. Scholten opposes Piker but stopped short of condemning El-Sayed.
