For nineteen long and anxious days following the Pahalgam event, Pakistan experienced something unique in contemporary history: genuine unity. There were no political disagreements, religious conflicts, sectarian issues, or regional grievances. From the bustling streets of Karachi to the tranquil valleys of Hunza, Pakistan’s 250 million people stood together like a single, impenetrable wall. It was more than just a reaction to a military standoff; it was a national declaration of identity, dignity, and sovereignty. This cohesion, a live manifestation of the Quranic concept of Bunyan Al-Marsoos (a solid, reinforced wall), served as the moral and spiritual foundation for Pakistan’s Operation Bunyan Al-Marsoos.
While Pakistan found strength in togetherness, India struggled to keep its own divisions hidden. Just as Pakistan’s military reaction was deliberate, disciplined, and based on deterrence principles, India’s media and administration launched a blustering, misleading, and overstated campaign. For two weeks, Indian channels promoted erroneous narratives, but when Pakistan eventually took action, it did it with accuracy rather than cacophony. In one decisive day, India’s inflated confidence was shattered, revealing that strength resides not in propaganda, but in preparation and unity of purpose.
Meanwhile, India’s internal divides became increasingly evident and undeniable. In Punjab, Sikh farmers and activists stated unequivocally that they would not allow Indian Army convoys to use their territory to begin attacks. The Muslim community in Kashmir escalated their resistance, fuelled by decades of oppression and surveillance. Simultaneously, Christian communities in Nagaland and other northeastern regions sought autonomy, challenging New Delhi’s rule. According to the 2023 Pew Research Centre survey, approximately 79% of Indian minorities believe they are discriminated against because of their beliefs, while caste-based crimes continue to rise annually, with over 50,000 documented cases in 2022 alone. These deep-rooted cultural fault lines reflect a nation at odds with itself rather than an external threat.
This fragmentation contrasts sharply with Pakistan’s united response. Regardless of ideology or geography, every Pakistani felt the sting of wrongful charges coming from over the border, as well as the need to defend the truth. Mosques, churches, temples, and gurdwaras all became places of prayer, not just for protection, but also for justice. Political leaders, typically divided by agendas, stood together to support the armed forces. Civil society organised online efforts to boost morale and combat misinformation, illustrating that national defence now extends beyond borders and into the digital domain.
Furthermore, Pakistan’s military plan during Operation Bunyan al-Marsoos was not rash. It was calibrated and guided by international law and engagement standards. The goal was deterrent, not devastation. The fact that Pakistan responded only after prolonged provocation demonstrates strategic maturity and caution. When India’s aggressive overtures, including unauthorised airspace incursions and unconfirmed accusations, pushed the line, Pakistan responded—not to deepen the conflict, but to restore deterrence and balance. This resulted in India’s rapid pivot, with the country desperately appealing to international intermediaries and even reaching out to US leaders, including former President Donald Trump, for diplomatic assistance. The irony was stark: a country that started the crisis now demanded global engagement to end it.
Furthermore, India’s attempt to designate Pakistan as a state sponsor of terrorism has now started to unravel. Despite India’s lobbying efforts, foreign authorities have been able to see through its story over time. Pakistan has made demonstrable progress in dismantling terrorist finance networks, as indicated by the Financial Action Task Force’s (FATF) removal of Pakistan from its grey list in 2022. This was more than just a bureaucratic achievement; it signalled to the world that Pakistan was committed to global security principles.
Meanwhile, stories continue to surface of India’s own covert operations in Gilgit-Baltistan and Balochistan, where groups backed by Indian intelligence have engaged in acts of sabotage and disinformation. A recent exposé by EU DisinfoLab in 2021 revealed a huge Indian network that used over 750 fake media sites and non-governmental organisations to propagate fake news about Pakistan in 116 nations. Such findings have brought India under increased scrutiny.
Even the worldwide public view is moving. Western analysts, who were previously eager to repeat Indian worries, are now reconsidering their opinions. The disparity in how each country handled the post-Pahalgam scenario was too significant to ignore. Pakistan responded with dignity, focussing on facts and legitimacy, but India’s media warfare crumbled under the weight of internal contradictions. While India boasted on television, Pakistan prepared quietly. And when the moment came, it acted–not with reckless force, but with clear purpose.
This moment is more than just a military victory for Pakistan. It represents a diplomatic and moral win. It sends a message to the world that Pakistan does not seek confrontation, but will never back down when sovereignty and truth are challenged. It also represents a turning point in regional politics. As India continues to experience internal turmoil, whether from disillusioned minorities or mounting domestic economic woes, its ability to operate as a coherent entity on the global arena weakens.
In the end, Operation Bunyan Al-Marsoos was more than just retaliation; it reflected Pakistan’s current state of resilience, unity, and genuine leadership. As India grapples with internal difficulties, the global community must now consider which country maintained calm and which flirted with catastrophe. This victory belongs not only to the military forces, but to all Pakistanis who stood steadfast, believed in the truth, and shown that unity, not might, dictates the course of history.
