The CameraJet, vibrating at 58,000 times per minute, uses a camera to detect gaps between teeth and sprays mouthwash from an integrated reservoir. This dual action of brushing and flossing aims to enhance oral hygiene.
Sir James Dyson, the inventor, shared his insights during an interview, revealing that the CameraJet boasts 38 patents and has been developed by 661 engineers over six years. His career has been marked by reinventing everyday products, from bagless vacuum cleaners to bladeless fans.
Dyson’s shift towards dental health was inspired by his own struggles with maintaining oral hygiene. He noted that only one in ten people floss regularly and that many spend insufficient time brushing. This led him to wonder why brushing and flossing could not be combined into a single action.
The CameraJet’s development presented significant challenges, particularly in identifying tooth gaps in real-time. Sir James explained that a sophisticated camera and lighting system were essential to navigate the dark environment of the mouth, synchronized with the brush’s high-speed vibrations.
To ensure the camera’s effectiveness, Dyson engineers created a non-foaming toothpaste, as conventional foaming toothpastes could obstruct the camera’s view. The brush employs a conical jet to gently yet effectively remove plaque, unlike the needle-like jets of other water flossers.

Sir James believes the CameraJet will not only improve gum health and reduce gum disease but also make teeth cleaning more engaging rather than a chore. Despite its £419.99 price tag, he argues that the innovation and quality justify the cost, potentially leading to fewer dental visits.
Dyson is also launching other products, including robot vacuums with mopping capabilities and a new mains-powered vacuum cleaner. However, the CameraJet is expected to be the standout product, with Sir James optimistic about its impact on dental hygiene practices.
