POLICY WIRE — New York, USA — A large crowd assembled near Washington Square Park on Sunday to participate in a look-alike contest for New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani.
Amadeo Fusca emerged as the winner, capturing the audience’s favor with his attire—a New York Knicks jersey under a suit, along with a haircut and facial hair reminiscent of Mamdani. He received a $100 prize for his efforts.
Mamdani, a democratic socialist who assumed office in January, has garnered significant popularity on social media and among younger city residents. The contest was backed by the social media platform Sonder.
The mayor’s policy focus is on redirecting governmental power to aid the city’s working class.
Nine contestants, several sporting facial hair similar to Mamdani’s, dressed in various styles inspired by the mayor, including suits, ties, and rings. One contestant even appeared shirtless but wore an apron, referencing a rap music video Mamdani featured in during 2019.

Contestants were asked to name their favorite pizza, and the winner was determined by the loudest applause from the crowd.
Initially, attendees gathered in the park, but they were instructed by police to relocate outside the park due to a lack of permit. This was not the first such event; a similar contest took place in Brooklyn in 2025 during Mamdani’s mayoral campaign.
