The scams involve men being lured into quick, fake marriages, often under the pretense of love and commitment. Victims are typically led to believe they are entering a legitimate union, only to find themselves duped and left with significant financial losses.

China’s one-child policy, implemented from 1979 to 2015, has created a substantial gender imbalance. The preference for male heirs led to a culture of sex-selective abortions and abandonment of baby girls, resulting in a surplus of unmarried men.

According to the National Bureau of Statistics, China had approximately 32 million more men than women in 2020. This imbalance has fostered a lucrative environment for scams targeting vulnerable bachelors.

“The situation is dire. We are seeing more and more cases of men being conned into these fake marriages,” said Li Wei, a spokesperson for the Beijing Public Security Bureau. “it is a complex issue that requires a multifaceted approach to solve.”

Social commentators argue that the root of the problem lies in the cultural and economic pressures faced by Chinese men. The expectation to marry and provide for a family, coupled with the high cost of living and housing, leaves many men feeling desperate.
