POLICY WIRE — Beijing, China — Brazil has overtaken Russia and Belgium to become the world’s largest importer of Chinese cars in the first five months of this year, according to Chinese customs data. The South American nation imported $5.2 billion worth of Chinese vehicles, marking a 146.9% increase from the $2.1 billion recorded during the same period last year. Brazil now ranks first globally in Chinese car imports, surpassing Russia, which imported $5 billion worth of vehicles, and Belgium, with imports totaling $3.8 billion.

The surge in imports is attributed to automotive brands expediting shipments ahead of a tariff increase set to take effect in July. Last year, Brazil ranked sixth among buyers of Chinese cars. The significant rise in imports underscores the growing influence of Chinese automotive manufacturers in the global market.
