At Least 109 Migrants Dead After Vessel Capsizes Off Djibouti Coast
A tragic maritime disaster off the coast of Djibouti has left 109 migrants dead and 116 missing. UN migration agency IOM confirms the vessel's sinking.
POLICY WIRE — Djibouti, Djibouti — A catastrophic maritime incident has claimed the lives of at least 109 migrants after their vessel capsized off the coast of Djibouti. The United Nations migration agency, the IOM, confirmed the tragedy on Sunday, October 11.
The disaster occurred overnight between October 8 and October 9. According to the IOM, the boat was carrying approximately 350 individuals when it went down in waters north of the city of Obock.
Among the 109 confirmed fatalities are 15 children. Search and rescue efforts are ongoing for the 116 people who remain missing following the capsizing.
