POLICY WIRE — Rome, Italy — The future of Gian Piero Gasperini, manager of Italian football club AS Roma, appears increasingly uncertain as he weighs his options regarding his tenure in the capital city.
Despite a contract running until 2028, Gasperini is reportedly contemplating an exit unless the club’s owners, the Friedkin Group, agree to a specific set of demands for his continued experience with the Giallorossi. The coach has expressed a desire for several operational changes, indicating a preference for a different approach compared to the recently concluded season.
Gasperini’s Key Demands for Continued Tenure
According to reports from Gazzetta dello Sport, Gasperini has articulated four critical conditions for him to remain in his position. The first pertains directly to the team’s transfer budget, with the coach insisting on a minimum investment matching his initial year.
- Transfer Budget: Gasperini requires an allocation of at least €97 million, consistent with the club’s investment during his first year, plus an additional €25 million generated from a potential transfer, such as Malen.
- Sporting Director Change: His second crucial request involves the departure of current sporting director Frederic Massara, citing a lack of a strong working relationship between the two.
Furthermore, Gasperini’s third condition seeks to sever all professional ties with Claudio Ranieri, who currently serves as a consultant to the Friedkin ownership. Lastly, and perhaps most broadly, the manager is demanding complete confidence in his overarching vision and operational strategy for the club.
“Full confidence in his program, from managing the team to selecting the staff surrounding it, including the medical staff, is paramount for Gasperini.”
The Stakes for AS Roma Ownership
While Gasperini has publicly expressed satisfaction with his choice to coach AS Roma, his current stance suggests a willingness to explore alternatives if his terms are not met. Should the club’s ownership fail to comply with these substantial requests, the former Atalanta boss is reportedly prepared to consider starting over.
There is significant interest from various clubs, both domestically and internationally, positioning him as a highly sought-after figure in the football world. His potential departure could signal a major shift for the Serie A side. Gasperini’s demands highlight the critical balance of power and vision between a coach and club management in modern football.
