Alaska Democrats Sue Over Failure to Open 18 Rural Voting Polling Sites
Alaska Democrats file a lawsuit against the Division of Elections for failing to open 18 rural voting locations, threatening access for remote voters.
POLICY WIRE — Juneau, Alaska — The Alaska Democratic Party and several state representatives have launched legal action against the state Division of Elections, alleging a systemic failure to activate numerous absentee in-person voting centers.
The lawsuit, officially filed in Anchorage Superior Court on Friday afternoon, claims that at least 18 rural polling locations remained closed despite being advertised as available to voters.
Legal filings in the complaint warn that these closures deprive thousands of residents living in remote areas of their ability to cast their ballots during the midterm election cycle.
This legal challenge arrives as a separate Justice Department lawsuit is unfolding regarding the ballot status of two U.S. Senate candidates sharing the name Dan Sullivan.
In addition to the Democratic leadership, two political organizations have joined the suit, asserting the division failed to operate dozens of sites across the state’s rural regions.
While rural sites reportedly remainededed voters in urban centers were able to access early voting facilities, including a location in Anchorage this past Friday.
