POLICY WIRE — Batam, Indonesia — A tornado struck an industrial site in Batam, Indonesia, on Wednesday morning, ripping roofing from workshop facilities and scattering construction materials. The incident occurred at VME Process in Tanjung Sengkuang, Batu Ampar, around 10am.

Helmeted workers were forced to flee as the short-lived wind vortex, locally known as a puting beliung, damaged workers’ shelters and disrupted operations. The tornado caused significant structural damage, prompting immediate evacuation.

Weather officials have warned that unstable atmospheric conditions could trigger further sudden storms in the region. Authorities are monitoring the situation closely — and advising residents to remain vigilant.
